Libraries as a Symbol of Hope and Support: A Story of Community Resilience

On the outskirts of Kharkiv, there is a small library serving the residents of the villages of Vysokyi, Babai, and Pokotylivka. Before Russia’s full-scale invasion, it was an ordinary place for reading and cultural development. However, with the onset of the war, its role drastically changed, becoming a true center of support and hope for local children, especially those forced to leave their homes.

When schools closed, and normal life was disrupted, the library opened its doors to the youngest members of the community. It transformed into a safe space where children could gather, learn, and interact. Here, they have the opportunity to feel a sense of stability and warmth, even if only for a while.

Librarians and volunteers organize creative workshops, educational activities, and social groups for the children. These initiatives help them adapt to the new reality, overcome fears, and make new friends. Despite challenges, including a lack of funding, the library remains true to its mission — to support the development and well-being of children.

Particular mention should be made of the heroism displayed by library staff during the most challenging times. Even during power outages, when darkness threatened to interrupt children’s activities, the instructors found ways to continue lessons. They used the light from their phones to illuminate the room and sustain the children’s drive to learn.

This summer, the library was visited by Hanna and Valeriia Khondak, who witnessed its work firsthand and met the volunteers dedicating their time and efforts to the children. Their goal was to determine how the MHF organization could support this vital mission and contribute to the further development of this unique community hub.

In these uncertain times, the library has become a symbol of resilience and community strength. It creates a sense of normalcy and support, reminding us all of the importance of unity and care for the most vulnerable — our children.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the librarians, volunteers, and everyone involved in this incredible endeavor! Your work is a light in the darkness, inspiring and bringing hope.
